Silica Nanoparticles and why Sharc Matter is different

Nanoscale silica (or silica nanoparticles (SNP)) has been used as an additive for resins and coatings for over 60 years. There are two primary types of commercially available SNP: Pyrogenic (flame spray pyrolysis) and Colloidal.

Pyrogenic silica, or fumed silica: Consists of fully densified particles; these do not exist as primary particles but as aggregates (loosely bound strings or clusters of particles). When included in a paint or adhesive formulation these aggregates can interact to form larger agglomerates resulting in an increase in viscosity (since they cannot easily move past each other). This phenomenon is known as thixotropy and is used to make paints more viscous. If stirred vigorously the agglomerates break down and the paint becomes more fluid (i.e. less viscous) – this is a process known as shear thinning and is widely used for paints in particular. However, to introduce silica without increasing viscosity  is very difficult with pyrogenic particles unless they are functionalised. This type of fumed silica is available, but is extremely limited in terms of its functionalities.

Colloidal silica: also fully dense. These are primary particles most typically available in aqueous suspension, and are used in water borne coatings, but have limited applicability in solvent borne systems or where water sensitivity exists. Functionalising these materials is very challenging since most functionalising agents are moisture sensitive. Mostly offered as very small particles (10-15nm) but with some larger variants available as niche products.

SMS silicas are discrete silica particles with a monomodal size distribution. A range of particles sizes are available in nanometers (e.g. SMS 35), and are offered in different dispersion liquids. The controlled and specific particle size and chemical environment allows SMS additives to be selectively and specifically incorporated into formulations for:
